Bbq Catering Company
Will caterers allow you to do some of your own dishes?
I am American and my fiancee is Ugandan. It is important for him to incorporate African food into the reception meal. We must have American food as well. The reception is at my sister’s home and we are renting a tent. We were going to hire a BBQ catering company and serve the food buffet style. The Ugandan food would be cooked by family. I am completely clueless as to how to pull this off without it being tacky. Is the catering company likely to allow this? Do I figure out the number of guests for the catering as a total? or do I try and estimate who will eat which type of food? Help!
Since the reception is at your sisters home you have A LOT more flexibility. (Normally you have health code requirements and what not). You can pretty much do what ever you like since it is a private party. =) Definitely things you could never do at professional wedding places–like bring your own home cooked food!
You basically have two options–just do it or include the caterer. It is your private party– it’s not like having an extra table of food at the reception is going to stop the BBQ company from getting paid. Or talk to the catering company about the situation. If necessary offer to add in some extra cash on top/or a tip for their help. If the BBQ company is privately owned you’ll have an easier time. Although when it boils down to it… you are giving them business in tough economic times so their thoughtfulness goes far.
To incorporate the idea I think it’d be cute if you did two completely different tables. One American looking and another Ugandan looking. You could use flag prints, etc to bring in both cultures. Place them near each other at one end of the tent so it flows as a food area but two completely separate ideas. That would work well if you chose to circumvent the caterer completely. If you need buffet supplies, you can get most of what you need trays and stands at any party supply store. =)
Good luck and congratulations!
