How can you fire clay without a kiln?
I don’t have a kiln, but I have a coal fire at home (I’m not sure what it’s made of. Maybe steel? Used to have a cast iron one, but now have one made of a stronger metal.) Also, we have a permanent barbeque outside, made of brick, with a metal shelf to hold the coal and wood, and ledges to add shelves higher up. It can stay very hot for hours after use, because of the coal.
I was wondering if any of these would be any use for firing clay sculptures. I don’t particularly want to go about digging holes, and I would like to keep my pieces relatively intact during and after firing.
The clay itself is rather nondescript in it’s labelling, but states that firing temperature should be 1050-1260, ideal firing at 1240. No indication as to what temperature scale.
Any help would be apprieciated
The easiest would be if you find a place which will fire your pieces for you for a fee. Look in your yellow pages for ceramic studios and phone them and ask whether they offer this service. If you use a fire it will be much more risky as for firing clay it is particular important not to raise the temperature too fast, otherwise the clay is likely to break.
The problem is that the numbers could be either in Fahrenheit or Celsius. In Fahrenheit it is really low fire clay, in Celsius it would be mid to high fire clay. If the range is given in Celsius it would be much larger than expected and only would make sense if it includes the range for bisque firing, but it might do that. Though if you bought the clay in the US, it is most likely fahrenheit.
