What is Seattle’s “signature” food (besides Starbucks)?
Pittsburgh has Primanti Brothers, Philadelphia has Pat’s Steaks (or Geno’s or Jim’s or Larry’s or whatever your personal preference is), New York has Famous Ray’s Pizza.
More generally, Chicago has deep dish pizza, Kansas City has barbeque.
What is Seattle’s culinary claim to fame?
Coffee, obviously–and Starbucks isn’t the only coffee company here. Tully’s, Seattle’s Best, and a few others are worth noting.
Obviously, seafood is a well-known big-ticket item here, which makes sense given our proximity to the Puget Sound, Pacific Ocean, and thousands of rivers with annual salmon runs. Shellfish are also pretty popular here–I personally wouldn’t eat them, but that’s my own preference.
The Northwest is also well-known for its wineries and microbreweries, its apples, its cranberries, and its wheat. We grow all kinds of other types of produce, particularly in eastern Washington.
For the record, I’ve never heard of any of the businesses you’ve listed. Perhaps those are more famous locally than country-wide–besides, I don’t think many people back east have heard of Ivar’s, Haggen, Uwajimaya, or Anthony’s–nor would I expect them too.
