Why do so many people insist on spelling barbecue with a q?
I’m not just talking about a a large number of individuals making an honest spelling mistake. Every time I go into McDonald’s or Burger King I find myself using something called Barbeque Sauce on my food. Now unless this is a sauce from somewhere in some french-speaking country pronounced barbeck, which just happens to taste the same as barbecue sauce, there’s something very wrong.
It’s like spelling ceaside thus because it’s got the sound of the letter c in it. It doesn’t make sense.
Surely the people in charge of printing names on sauces in fast food restaurants should know better!
1. Because it IS an accepted spelling.
2. It has likely become common due to the practice of abbreviating it as BBQ, thus leading more people to use it as a preferred spelling.
