Meat Smoker Plans
has anyone built/have plans for a charcoal fired fish/meat smoker. cheers.?
I’ve seen lots of ready made smokers on the net but they want lots of money for them. Also they do’nt look too hard to make.
I amde one in Jamaica, for smoking fish , I used a new galvanized garbage can, you drill holes for S hooks to mount your grill, a replacement one from a hardware store, and then a small metal vessel to make the fire pit in and put your smoking chips in , it will cost you around $20-25 dollars AM.
For the metal fire vessel, they sell metal paint pails, sometimes a number of then for a few dollars, and in the same hardware stores they sell the charcoal (Lump) and smoking chips.
Just make sure you measure, for the grill as you can make a number of hole to raise and lower the grill, as some things need more heat and less smoke and some the other. Fish and poultry need more heat so you would set them lower, cooked meats, beef or sausage are to smoked at a higher level, unless you want to cook them, then at the lower level, for safety reason get a instant read meat thermometer, you also want to drill some holes in the top to allow the smoke out you can make a number and if you want a heavier flavour just cover them up with foil or cardboard.
Check out the hardware stores for the materials, and shop around you can find some bargains, even garage and yard sale, sometime people get rid of old cast iron pots which are good for the firepit.
