What’s the difference between a propane only grill and a propane/natural gas grill?
Obviously they are said to use different types of gas, but what I mean is how they are designed or built. I.E. smaller holes on the burners. I wanted to know because my natural gas grill can’t get hot enough to burn a hot dog.
Natural gas has less btu’s than propane so the opening is larger for natural gas. It is fairly common knowledge that the orifice is larger for NG, but most people do not realize that the controls are usually different as well on originally equipped grills for the different fuels.
If you convert a NG grill to propane without changing the control cartridges, the controls will allow too much fuel through. This will cause the controls to have very little influence on the flame other than to turn it on or off. Conversely if you convert from propane to NG without changing the cartridges the passages are too small. The flame is fine on full heat, but the control will reduce the flame a lot as soon as you move it down in temperature. It also will have very little control over the flame other than to turn it off.
The only other difference is that the propane unit requires a regulator to drop the cylinder pressure to a consistent 11″wc (about 1/2 psi) so that the flame is consistent. A natural gas grill does not need a regulator other than the one at the meter. The rest of the appliance is the same.
If your grill was converted it might not have got the new cartridges or the flame has not been correctly adjusted at the burner. It should be a nice even blue flame. Not orange, and not “dancing” off of the burner too much. Hope this helps!
