Outdoor carpet on deck?

I dont know much about outdoor carpets and hoping someone can help me:
I live in a townhome with a balcony on the top floor – wooden floor. Now there are chips and nails and i want my toddler to be able to walk in and out barefeet – so was thinking of an outdoor carpet. Can i do that?? I am thinking covering 3/4 of the floor and leaving a quarter open for the grill. Do we need to put in something under it too? Can it withhold rain/snow and all??? any feedback appreciated.

There are indoor/outdoor carpets, usually found in the rug section of discount stores like Wal-Mart. Or, you can by it measured at places like home depot. I have never used them before, but they are supposed to withstand the elements. I haven’t seen any types of installation kits or padding for this type of carpeting; to my knowledge, it just sits on the deck or patio surface like an area rug. Whatever you do, make sure that what you get is designed to be outdoors. If not, even if this area is covered, moisture from rain, fog, humidity, etc. will get into it and create a breeding haven for mold, mildew, and bacteria.
