Propane Gas Grill
A gas barbecue grill uses propane gas.The propane is stored in a rigid tank.What happens to the pressure?
Of the propane when the tank is left outside on a very hot summer day?What about on a cold winter day?
The pressure is zero at -44°F. As the temperature moves up from there the pressure will increase. At 0°F the pressure is about 30psi, at 70°F the pressure is about 130psi and at 100°F the pressure is almost 200psi.
Cylinders (like we use on a grill) have a 375 psi relief valve to protect them from overpressure. Tanks (like on a home heating application) have a 250 psi relief valve.
This pressure change is independent of volume. If you have a 20lb grilling cylinder, a 500 gallon tank, a disposable coleman bottle or a 30,000 gallon storage plant tank…the pressure will be the same in them all, as long as the temperature of the liquid inside is the same.
