Why should fat people and smokers get medicare for illness they caused themselves?
They over eat, get fat, and get the level of health their habits land them. Just like smokers and their cancers, drunks and sorosis of the liver, etc. Why should these people who don’t care about themselves get other people to pay for their self inflicted illnesses? Why should they not insure themselves and cash flow their own treatment?
And I already know there is a slippery slope argument coming, and for the record, it’s fine by me if the government is 100 out of the health insurance business.
Um, because they pay for it?..
I also often question the assertion that smokers cost the system more than non-smokers. There is no question that smokers cost more at the end of their lives for treatment of various maladies but they die relatively young while non-smokers continue to drain the system, often for decades..
I have spent many years working in nursing homes that cost medicare a fortune and guess what? Almost no smokers, generally one or two in a 180 bed facility..
